I am building on a previous post about collage art to explore art for a child’s room in this episode. This can range from a nursery wall illustration to art for a bedroom or study for toddlers and children up to age 8 (more or less).

Great art for a child’s room
What is it that actually makes art suitable or even great for a child’s room?
According to various websites/opinions:
it balances aesthetic sophistication with developmental benefits, ensuring it is “visually engaging” and “educational”. It should reflect the child’s personality while growing with them, avoiding overly literal or “babyish” themes that quickly become outdated.

One of the things that I like about art is it’s capacity to stimulate creativity, vision, fantasy and imagination beyond anything.
It can border on surreal fantasy.
To me that is precious for children (as well as adults if you ask me). I wouldn’t refer to that as “educational” (what does that word even mean?), but more as joyfully expanding horizons.
Empowering children
THE SKY
is the limit.
At least that used to be the case. I think it actually goes much further and many children can probably learn adults a thing or two about this …
Also: children are not the only ones who love to play 🙂

Preferences shift as children grow

Nice one. Of course it is not all that black and white (that would not be my first color choice for art for children by the way). Truth is we don’t really know how taste and style will develop.
This painting of a ballerina will most likely appeal to a girl aged 4-5. In my case I never really recovered from “pink” :-).
And to a ballerina it may always remain attractive.
It’s just one of the things to keep in mind when choosing art for a child’s room.
Personal interests

Many children are interested in nature and magical creatures.
You will make them happy by helping to create a nature-inspired environment for them
Animal Friends
Of course there is no way to have a post dedicated to art for children without a cat! Most children love cats, although some are a bit too enthusiastic in running towards them. Cats need their space and only invite you if they feel good about you. Their joyful purring sound is actually healing!

Tending the "Inner Child"
Art for children does not have to be “childish”. It can appeal to adults as well.
Some therapists say we all have an “inner child” that needs to be “liberated” and what have you.
I don’t know about that, but anything that can help us relax and feel inspired, in flow, is something to cherish.
